Natal chart reference
A natal chart is divided into twelve houses. Within this site’s informational astrology framework, each house describes an area or context of life in which planets and signs can be interpreted.
Houses and signs
Zodiac signs are twelve fixed 30-degree sectors of the tropical zodiac. They describe styles or modes of expression. Houses are chart divisions tied to a particular birth time and place, and they describe the life context in which a planet’s function is expressed.
A Sun sign therefore does not determine the houses. Two people with the same Sun sign can have different Ascendants, house cusps, and planetary house placements.
Cusps and Placidus
A house cusp is the zodiac longitude at which a house begins. This application’s Birth Chart calculator uses the Placidus house system, so houses are not assumed to be equal 30-degree divisions.
Exact local birth time and birthplace matter because the Ascendant and Placidus cusps depend on the birth instant and geographic coordinates. An approximate time can change a cusp or move a planet into a neighbouring house.
Reading a complete chart
A planet describes a function, its zodiac sign describes how that function is expressed, and its house describes the life area in which it operates. Aspects add relationships between planetary functions. No house should be treated as a standalone prediction or a complete personality verdict.
